Spring Has Sprung!

 Spring Has Sprung!

Bright colors, beautiful weather, and positive thoughts!  Spring is my favorite time of year.  I enjoy the new life it brings all around me.  When I think spring, I think of gardening!  I came across this quote the other day and it inspired me:

"A garden is a grand teacher.
                                     it teaches patience and careful
                                     watchfulness; it teaches industry
and thrift; above all, it teaches
                                     entire trust."  ~Gertrude Jekyll

It reminded me of all there is to learn when we plant a garden...including math!  There are so many ways we use math skills when we plant a garden: from planning a garden design, to purchasing supplies, to measuring as we plant and our plants grow, to counting the produce that we harvest.  The list goes on.  There are also plenty of life lessons we can learn: how to work hard to achieve a bountiful harvest, the benefits of healthy living and eating healthy foods.  But most importantly, in my opinion, is caring for another living thing: checking in daily to make sure that all needs are met for proper growth, weeding the garden area to keep plants growing safely, never giving up on bringing a drooping plant back to life.  We all need gardeners in our lives!

Now back to math...I was also inspired to create a project based learning activity where students could practice functional math skills.  If you are looking for a great spring activity, one that is engaging and useful, check it out by clicking on the picture below.  Let's teach our students how to be amazing gardeners!

Happy gardening!
